Sports News: Mum of Grand National Winner only won £50

It come as a shock to us all on Saturday 4th April 2009 as Liam Treadwell ran home to a shock win at the Grand National, but no one is more surprised than his mum, who was so sure he would lose that she bet just 50p on him to win!

Lorraine Treadwell pocketed £50 from her stake after her 23 year old son produced one of the the biggest upsets in racing history by winning the Grand National on 100 to 1 outsider Mon Mome.

Mrs Treadwell, 46, was as stunned as the rest of the country when she watched her sons fantastic win from the family home in Arundel, West Sussex, with her husband Mark.

She commented on the whole thing: I do not usually bet but always put 50p on the National. I did not want to bet any more in case I jinxed Liam and because the odds were so long I did not think he had much of a chance, especially as this was his first National.

This is what Liam has dreamed about since he began riding ponies when he was seven.

The only disappointing thing is that when I spoke to him last week I told Liam to get his hair cut in case he did well and got interviewed on TV, but he ignored me.

While most bookies had a Grand National bonanza from the outsiders win, Ladbrokes in Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, 3 miles from Mon Mome trainer Venetia Williams yard, saw a string of loyal supporters backing the horse, with many placing each way bets for £5 despite the odds of 100/1.

Deputy shop manager James Yorke said: I must be the only bookie who has not made a fortune on the big race. There were loads of punters in my shop who had a fiver each way on Venetia’s outsider. Shes really popular round here and the odds didnt put anybody off.
